Trespass

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 9:45 pm

A script from Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, and direction from Waleter Hill all make this a bizarre not-your-common-action-thriller film. “Trespass” is the amazing result, where Bill Paxton and William Sadler are the good guys and Ice T and Ice Cube are the bad guys. Interesting enough eh?

Trespass tells the story of two firemen embarking on a treasure hunt in a big abandoned factory in East St Louis. The property happens to be the territory of King James (Ice T) and his gang. After murdering some of their enemies, the firemen accidentally witnesses the murderous deed and suddenly find themselves the next targets. The succeeding scenes become more exciting as they lead to shootouts and standoffs as the firemen fight among themselves. The storyline is really simple, which just shows that two groups of people meet at the wrong place at the wrong time. If you are looking for a different kind of thrill, watch this movie.

Scarface

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 9:43 pm

Finding a reason why you should watch Scarface? It is actually two things. One, it is because Scarface is one of the most influential films of the 20th century. Two, it is finally available in high definition DVD, unlike the first release which is worse.

Brian DePalma’s Scarface gets better and better with every scene. The picture has improved dramatically compared to the original DVD release. The sound also contributes to every aspect of the film. Unlike the first release which was just a mere exchange of words and bullets, Scarface reveals the subtleties that was never shown to you. For example, you can clearly see what Al Pacino does with his face in shadowy closeups. Or the way he registers when he’s thinking deeply. The film has a great story about Tony Montana. He is a criminal in his ways, yet he is not an immoral man. An excellent cinematography also thrives in this film. Watch and find out why this is one of the most popular movies in the 20th century.

Desperado

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 9:43 pm

Prior to the creation of Desperado, Robert Rodriguez actually made a small film entitled “El Mariachi”, which was praised by many. After making money from that film, he creates a more brilliant follow up which is Desperado.

Desperado is the continuation of El Mariachi which tells the story of a traveling musician looking for a job. Because of his mysterious aura and rugged looks, he gets mistaken for a hitman. One of the strengths of the movie is that the cast is well-formed. Antonio Banderas does a great job in playing the mysterious stranger in town. Steve Buscemi, Cheech Marin, and Salma Hayek also give outstanding performances. The film also has a solid storyline that entertains the audience. The film is full of great action scenes reminiscent of the wild wild west scene. Of course, humor is a great success factor in this film, which reminds me of Quentin Tarantino’s movies. If you are looking for action plus fun, watch Desperado.

From Dusk Till Dawn

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 9:45 pm

Robert Rodriguez joins forces with Quentin Tarantino to create Dusk Till Dawn, a horrific adventure which involves vampires. QT plays Richard Gecko, a psychopath who gets his crime partner and brother Seth, played by George Clooney, out of prison. They rob a bank and leave a bloody mess. They attack a mobile home owned by a former Baptist minister, played by Harvey Keitel. The Gecko brothers take their hostages to Titty Twister bar to rendezvous for a money drop. They later realize that they have just entered a dangerous lair of vampires.

From Dusk Till Dawn is not your ordinary vampire flick. It is a great film with a mix of comedy, brutality, and thriller. Rodriguez and Tarantino continue their legacy of creating simple yet exciting films. Even the dialogues are unique, those which you would not expect in a typical horror movie. Despite the horrific mood, Dusk Till Dawn does not miss out on fun!

Amistad

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 10:05 pm

Amistad is based on the historical incident in 1893 of a group of slaves take over the ship Amistad and end up in Connecticut. These slaves were taken from their villages and were being transported for slave trade. While in the ship, one man is able to escape from his chains and leads a rebellion against the ship’s crew. They must kill the crew in order to claim their freedom. They are soon discovered in American waters, and are captured by the Americans. They are questioned for murder. Suddenly, the case spreads around the world, and many are claiming to own them. One lawyer takes the responsibility of defending the slaves, claiming that they are citizens of Africa.

Spielberg blends the emotions of a courtroom drama and indictment against the slave system of old America. It is a highly recommended film that reflects society then and now. It shows the courage and determination of the human spirit.

Artificial Intelligence

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 9:20 pm

Artificial Intelligence is a science fiction thriller that will make you think. It investigates the deepest depths of human emotions. AI is a dark and brilliant film with an outstanding script and cast. It is a unique blend of Stanley Kubrick’s unconventional style and Steven Spielberg’s energy.

The story is about a robot child David, who is the first robot made to love. David is introduced to his human family, and experiences many emotions such as love, jealousy, and hate. The film brings chills to the audience as David the robot child becomes strangely sweet by whispering “I love you Mommy”. The mother gets confused and horrified and she finally leaves David in the woods . David clings to the car while screaming. Many people consider this movie brilliant and flawed at the same time. There is a lot to be thought about especially when you see it for the first time. Yet, it is always great to watch something new and entertaining.

Minority Report

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 9:53 pm

What if the future turns out to be something that the world fears the most? Minority Report explores this thought and feeds listeners with lots of reflections and questions.

The story begins in the year 2054. Tom Cruise plays a chief detective Anderton at the Department of Precrime. Anderton and his men have one task in mind: to stop crimes that have not happened yet. They are able to determine the people who are involved in future crimes, as well as the time, and they are able to rush to the crime scene, all with the help of three “pre-cogs”. There lies only one problem: the possibility of a flaw wherein the pre-cogs may turn out wrong. Minorit Report has one of the most interesting storylines that I have ever watched. Steven Spielberg goes into the unknown, creating provoking thoughts in the audience’s minds. He has done it again in the science fiction thriller genre.

Catch Me If You Can

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 10:13 pm

One of the most entertaining movies that I have watched is “Catch Me If You Can”, which is another excellent film directed by Steven Spielberg. The movie is the story about a real-life con artist Frank Abagnale, Jr. The film is set in the 60’s and 70’s. He wrote 2.5 milion dollars in bad checks when he was 16 to 21 years of age, which made him one of the most notorious con men in the history of America.

Steven Spielberg directs another quality film which is reminiscent of his classic films such as “Jurassic Park” and “Jaws”, without the adventure aspect. “Catch Me If You Can” is more of an entertaining and funny movie which touches hearts. In reality, Abegnale is a successful security consultant who uses his strengths to protect businesses from crime. He has intelligent and ambitious approach to things, with a sense of humor. Spielberg does a great job in making the villain lovable, and at the same time realistic.

The Terminal

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 9:48 pm

Steven Spielberg is very much noted for “Jaws”, “Jurassic Park”, and “Artificial Intelligence”. On “The Terminal”, Spielberg takes a new road in directing, which is uncharacteristic of him. Yet, he manages to pull it off, by trudging into unfamiliar territory with an air of assurance and integrity. This openness and willingness to experiment is what makes great directors such as Spielberg himself.

Mr. Spielberg never fails to draw the crowd, especially on “The Terminal”. While watching the film, I realized I was watching a different Tom Hanks. Spielberg makes his characters act their roles well, regardless of their popularity. The movie just has awesome directing. In the film, he throws in lots of subtle background moments that make you smile when you notice them. Spielberg makes good use of lighting, which makes this a heart-warming film. Fans may not expect this film to be as exciting as his previous works, yet Spielberg makes the journey more adventurous by making his own brand of romantic films.

Munich

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 10:19 pm

Munich is a film about the 1972 Olympics tragedy. Eleven Israeli athletes are kidnapped by members of Black September, a group of Palestinian terrorists. An Israeli Counter-Terrorist team of Avner (EricBana), Steve (Daniel Craig), Carl (Ciaran Hinds), Robert (Mathieu Kassovitz), Hans (Hanns Zischler), and Mossad Accountant (Oded Teomi) are instructed by Ephraim (Geoffrey Rush) to assassinate each of the kidnappers.

Munich is a film that touches on our world’s current events. Steven Spielberg has directed a very profound storyline. He makes the movie an emotional experience in such a way that he directs attention to moments in history which will always haunt us. The characters are also well-picked, and the cinematography is nothing short of brilliant. Spielberg exhibits his unique directing style by drawing philosophical conclusions. In the movie, he sends us a message that violence and vengeance always have evil effects in our lives. You cannot beat violence with violence.

Schindler’s List

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 9:57 pm

After directing the highly successful “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park”, Steven Spielberg creates a terrific masterpiece with “Schindler’s List”. Spielberg’s film is one of the best ever made about the Holocaust during World War II. It greatly illustrates heroism in the most unusual people.

The movie is about Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) who is a German living in Poland during World War II. This drinker and womanizer risked his life and turned bankrupt just to save 1,000 Jews from the concentration camps. He employs Jews in his crockery factory to manufacture goods for the German army. He tries to remain solvent with the help of a Jewish accountant. He also negotiates with a fierce Nazi commandant who shoots Jews at a prison camp as a target practice from the villa’s balcony. Spielberg does another splendid job in effectively capturing the inhumanity of World War II and transforming it into a very important lesson for the humankind.

A Bronx Tale

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 10:05 pm

Aside from being a great actor, Chazz Palminteri is also a great writer. He has written the script for Robert De Niro’s 1993 film “A Bronx Tale”. Despite being underrated, it is still a beautiful film with heart.

“A Bronx Tale” tells the story of an Italian American Boy who grows up in the 60’s. During his youth, his life is torn apart between his blue-collar father (Robert De Niro) and a mafia boss and mentor (Chazz Palminteri). His father is a hardworking bus driver who makes sure that he grows as a law abiding citizen. On the other hand, his mentor is a mafia chieftain who influences him significantly. The two form a friendship, and eventually the young boy joins the mafia, which is against his father’s wishes. Although he wants out of the mafia, he is unable to leave it. His father ultimately needs to make a decision to save his son’s life. “A Bronx Tale” is not really a mobster flick, but a great story that will truly touch your heart.

Sin City

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 10:02 pm

Sin City offers a new creative style in the world of cinema. It inspires a combination of filmmaking and comic books / graphic novels. The film is also different as compared to numerous comic-inspired films such as Spiderman, X-Men, and other Marvel films. It is more exciting in the sense that it uses unique film effects and outstanding cinematography.

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller take their creative juices to an extremely high level. They pour their best in every shot, every frame, and every action scene. The cast is also brilliant, and has executed their roles in a classy fashion. Mickey Rourke puts up a bold performance. Bruce Willis has done his best performance yet. Literally, everyone is just perfect in the film. Sin City is just a reflection of great lost art during the renaissance times. Just enjoy the ride. Sin City will impress you to the bones.

Fight Club

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 10:12 pm

Before seeing Fight Club, you may think the film is another action-filled movie. David Fincher catches you off guard as soon as you start watching Fight Club, which is a fast moving journey into a person’s mind.

The film is a brilliant creation which is thought-provoking, mischievously funny, and very entertaining. The film does not explain each idea nor does it serve it to you in a silver platter. Instead, Fight Club takes you on a journey of self-exploration and self-discovery. Though the film has received numerous comments such as having too much violence, it implies that you should not be discouraged by the film and be smartly open-minded. The story demonstrates how today’s society has partly become in terms of human violence. Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and the rest of the cast have done a terrific job in conveying this. Watch Fight Club and see it for yourself.

Pulp Fiction

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 9:56 pm
After the critically acclaimed 1992 film Reservoir Dogs, writer-director Quentin Tarantino comes up with a smash heavyweight film Pulp Fiction. Tarantino is a very exciting and creative director who uses all the necessary resources to achieve the full effect that he wants. Combining comedy, with absurdity and brutality, Pulp Fiction will definitely impress you.

Pulp Fiction tells of three stories that intersect. The film is like a novel which five parts that were ripped apart and put back in a mixed up fashion, which leaves audiences guessing where the story starts and ends. The story begins with Samuel Jackson and John Travolta who are ordered by boss Ving Rhames to a hit, and ends with Bruce Willis and his girlfriend escaping out of town riding on a homicidal maniac’s stolen motorcycle. Each story in the film is already a film itself, which makes the film an integrated whole. The entire cast is superb as well, with each one playing an interesting role. This film is a must watch for those looking for real entertainment.

Signs

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 10:20 pm

The Signs is another thrilling film created by M. Night Shyamalan. The film is a science fiction thriller that depicts aliens. Shyamalan executes an atmospheric tension instead of explanatory plotting in the film. Although the overall feeling of the film is haunting, Shyamalan puts subtle humor in the movie which makes it a unique horror experience.

The film narrates the story of the Hess family in Bucks, Pennsylvania. One morning, the family wakes up shocked to find a 500-foot crop circle in their backyard. Mel Gibson plays Graham Hess, who is the head of the family. He and his family are told that extraterrestials are responsible for the absurd sign in their backyard. The story keeps running while the apprehensive family learns that more crop circles are discovered all over the world. Signs is an excellent film about the alien invasion of the world, which will blow your minds.

The Shining

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 9:59 pm

The Shining revolves in the Overlook Hotel, which is a haunted place which possesses its off-season caretaker and turns him into a murderous rage against his wife and young son. The film starts out with the beautiful yet haunting arial shots of a mountain. Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance, a Vermont school teacher who works at the hotel as a winter caretaker. Jack brings his wife Wendy and young son Danny, who has some strange psychic powers.

In the middle of the film, odd and mysterious events take place in the hotel. Jack also slowly becomes strange and evil. Kubrick does a tremendous job in outlining the physical and emotional details of the film. Jack’s comic character in the beginning slowly turns into a mischievous devil-possessed person. The creepy walls and carpets of the hotels help build up the suspense as well. Kubrick makes this such a great film that you will excitingly wait for the thrilling ending.

Jurassic Park

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 9:59 pm

As a kid, I remembered the summer days I spent in my grandparents’ house in the countryside. After lunch, me and my cousins would gather in the living room and watch movies. Most of the films we watched were thrilling and adventure-filled. Of all the movies that I have watched, Jurassic Park was my favorite.

Jurassic Park was directed by Steven Speilberg, and revolves around an enormous park which exhibited dinosaurs. I have been always fascinated with dinosaurs since I was young, and seeing the movie was very amazing. The dinosaurs seemed very realistic, as well as the chasing scenes and setting. Although I did not know anything about cinematography, the film was just so natural and well-crafted. All the characters gave an outstanding performance. Nevertheless, the T-Rex was the fiercest and most exciting character in the film. Many years from now, I can still see myself watching the movie over and over again.

Vanilla Sky

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 10:52 pm

Adopted from Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar’s 1997 romantic thriller Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes), Vanilla Sky is an erotic science fiction that makes you ponder on life’s issues.

The film tells the story of David Aames (played by Tom Cruise) who is a rich young man who has inherited his late father’s publishing empire. Cameron Diaz plays David Aames’ girlfriend who is taken for granted by him. Aames is does not really care about anything especially the people around him. One night, his best friend (played by Jason Lee) brings a mysterious dancer (played by Penelope Cruz) to his birthday party. Then something happens between Aames and the dancer and his life is changed forever. Vanilla Sky is a uniqe mixture of psychological thriller, science fiction, and mystery. Tom Cruise and the rest of the cast have done a great job in giving superb performances. Audiences will either love or hate this movie. If you ask me, I suggest to “open your eyes” and just enjoy the movie.

Trainspotting

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 10:16 pm

No one would expect that Trainspotting would be one of the proudest moments of 1996. Despite negative views of this film, its scenes containing unpleasant hallucinations such as crawling dead babies and gross toilets make this film a fabulous standout. The film will only appeal to the open-minded and the select few. Trainspotting is a mixture of outrageous comedy and real life drama. It is about the reality of drug addiction, told in a very sincere way.

Trainspotting features mostly dark moments, as well as gross moments, funny moments, and horrifying moments. It also has a good storyline and a great cast. This film is not intended for minors, as the film shows brutally honest details about drugs. From bloody needles and mixing of the drugs, to dead babies and stinky toilets, I would not recommend this to young and innocent viewers. This film is best suited for those looking for great quality films.
